My Poor Ears

I haven't heard it yet but I know it's coming. For some reason each and every year about this time that sound of fingernails on a chalkboard is broadcast over the television airwaves. Although I refuse to watch the entire presentation, I will be subjected to the ear piercing opening song every so often by way of a TV commercial. What is this noise that's reminiscent of a cat's yowl when its tail gets caught by a lawn mower blade? It's Julie Andrews bellowing out 'The hills are alive with "The Sound of Music".

Just the thought of hearing this again makes me want to take a pair of knitting needles and jamb them into my ears. Arrrgh! Yes, blown out ear drums with blood dripping down my neck would be better than having to listen to that siren of the underworld again.

Is the rest of the movie good? I'll never know. Just the mere possibility that the opening song would be replayed somewhere else during the show is enough to keep me at bay. Have I mentioned how much I don't like that song?

I don't have anything against Julie's accomplishments as an actress. She's been in numerous movies that I've enjoyed over the years, but "The Sound of Music" otherwise known as "The Sound of Satan Calling His Demons Home" isn't one of them.

Perhaps they could do a remake of this so called classic and call it "The Sound of Silence". Now that would be worth not listening to!

How funny that you should really dislike this song.....I love it!
But my hubby feels the same as you. I wonder if it is a "guy" thing. This has been one of my favorite movies since childhood. I can remember singing "Doe, a dear, a female dear" constantly as a kid....and even as an adult.

Wow - I disagreed with you and still commented :)

OK just for the record, I did not delete the first comment! haha

Roger- Sounds like a good time, but I don't think Lisa will be to keen with me going to see it. I'll be waiting for your review.

Kerri- I honestly did not know that other song was in the movie. Of course "Stairway to Heaven" could be in there too and I wouldn't know that either.

I like your hubby already!

You know, I love the movie but also dislike that song. It is not my favorite musical since I find it really long. The girls and I always sing the "Goodnight" song.
My all time favorite musical...okay musicals...would have to be Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and The King and I.

I was going to sing you a verse, but decided not to. I'm not too keen on the song either, but I do like the movie...and the other songs in it...I think you should watch it just once...rent it and skip over the songs....lol...
Peace

I remember when she married Blake Edwards, and wanted to ditch the "good girl" image that "The Sound Of Music" and "Mary Poppins" had saddled her with. She went topless for a brief moment in one of his movies! Rather non-descript boobies- but better than none....

When the dog bites
When the bee stings
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad

You'd know what I'm singin if you could get past the first song...
How about trying the MUTE button, maybe you'd get through the opening song?

Oh Dear God...What a hideous movie, and worse yet, I live with someone who could watch it every frickin' day. Oh the Humanity!!

Cheers!!

It's truly a guy thing! It might have been more fun to see Ms. Andrews belt out the song before tripping and rolling down the Swiss mountainous hills, "Wwheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

Yes.

And a little trivia for you trivia buffs... Men dig The Sound of Silence because two guys sang it oh-so many moons ago (Simon and Garfunkel), supposedly right after seeing that opening scene with Julie Andrews!

Okay. Maybe not.

"Wheeeeeeeee!"

So, let me get this straight Jeff. You don't like The Sound of Music... Bwahahahah. There you have it. You made me laugh out loud. Have a great day. :)

yes..the opening scene is hokey...FAST FOWARD thru it and watch the rest of the movie. It is wonderful.

but just for you....
Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision
that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.

Blasphemer!!!!!

Infidel dog!!!!!

How could you SAY that about the incomparable Ms. Andrews?!

*blink, blink*

Bwahahahahaha!

Jules- I'm not real big on musicals in general. I know big surprise, but The King and I is one I don't mind.

Odat- I'm going to take your suggestion. It should be a great three minutes! hehehe

Buffalo- Seroiusly? I didn't know that. Why do I think watching The Princes Diaries would be histerical now?

Anndi- ARRRGH!

I'd try the mute button, but I can lip read so I'm afraid I'd still be suffering.

Matt- I feel your pain. Lisa takes great joy in turning up the volume anytime that stinking commercial comes on.

Kevin- Now that would be entertainment! The hills...thud...are alive....crash, bang, biff...with the...

Maybe Adam West could play the lead?

Sandee- Did I say I didn't like it? I meant to say I DETEST it!

Katherine- Thank you for humming a few bars. The savage beast is feeling more calm now.

Songbird- Ms Andrews I can live with as long as I don't ever have to see her in that Stupid white bonnet prancing through the hills sining that insipid song.

Oh and that's Mr. infidel dog if you would please!

It's not a guy thing. I love The Sound of Music and I love that song.

Mute the scenes with the music if you must. The movie itself is wonderfully acted and tells a story of the perseverence of love in a time of hate.

You make your feelings about that song quite clear , Jeff.

Gosh, Jeff.....why don'tcha tell us how you REALLY feel....

Hey Jeff, you ought to live at my house with all these women! I've got a whole list of musicals that make me want to puke. LOL!

Jeff B said...

Travis- I understand the love/hate thing perfectly. I love to hate that song! Glad it warms your heart though.

Annie- Not a lot of grey area here.

Mel- I'm working on comming out of my shell.

Gene- My Idea of a good musical is the "Star Spangled Banner" sung just before a baseball game!

Schmoop- I would normally say thanks for visiting, but I'm a bit torn after reading/hearing that opening line. Turn it off, Turn it off.

Blasphemer...I can live with that.

To my Ex-Son:

Arrrrrrrrrwww. Now you've done it, you've really begged for a negative comment this time! How DARE you, how could you . . . blaspheme my heroine, Julie Andrews and one of my all-time favorite movies. The woman had the voice of an angel. I even liked Christopher Plummer until I read that he said he hated making that movie and thought it was smaltzy and dumb (or words to that effect). Well, now I can't stand him either. Where, I ask you, did I go wrong in your upbringing. And to think I had fallen in love with Matt-Man, but it appears that his taste, like yours, is all in his mouth; his saving grace is that he is married to a lady of infinite good taste who appreciates the finer things in life. I want you to know that on Christmas Day, there will be NO football games on in my house. Rather, I will drag out my well-worn and oft viewed copy of The Sound of Music and will play it ALL DAY LONG . . . over and over and over and over -- loudly. And, your attendance at this event is NOT optional, it's mandatory. So, take that . . . and that . . . and that, you infidel!

I like The Sound of Music and The Sound of Silence.

I don't think my husband likes either... but he does like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and goes around the house singing... "well bless MY beautiful hide..." The switcheroo in the lyricks proabably says something deep about him psycologically...
